Global Access Point was founded in 2003 by Kevin Smith, President and sole proprietor. However, Mr. Smith’s vision began long before Global Access Point opened its doors and began operating as stand alone company. In fact, his experience in the technology field began back in 1980 when he started his first technology based company, named Softchip Technologies.
His interest in Union Station began shortly after he graduated from Notre Dame in 1978, when he purchased the station for the purpose of housing the family business, Deluxe Sheet Metal. Union Station had previously fallen into disuse in the late 1960’s with the decline of passenger train service. While his father moved the company into the freight portion of the west end of the building, Mr. Smith pursued his passion in architecture and design by renovating the passenger portion of the station. Upon completion in 1983, the doors of Union Station were opened for formal events such as weddings.
The first carrier moved into Union Station in 1987. With the convergence of three separate rail systems at the south side and structurally sound design of the building it made for an ideal location for carriers to colocate their equipment, add and drop traffic, and regenerate their signal along the long haul routes.
The first enterprise company moved into Union Station in 2003 and has been evolving and expanding ever since. When Mr. Smith envisioned opening the doors of Union Station to private enterprise companies, he did so with the foresight of building the most secure and redundant facility to give all levels of companies, small and large, the ability to purchase the exact increments of service they would require, never purchasing more than they need.
Today, Global Access Point is only one of two carrier hotels in the state of Indiana. We have built our strong name on integrity, impeccable design, and hard work.
